This April, Victor and I had a road trip along the coast of California. We visited Yosemite (of course, highlight of California), santa barbara (a grad school friend of mine, Dr. Shaohua Wang is a visiting scholar at UCSB), LA (after we saw La La Land), Joshua Tree, and San Diego (my ABM conference was there).

We enjoyed our time a lot at the two national parks, also enjoyed food in LA (but not the city), and beer at San Diego.

产于印度黄金海岸带的腰果甜酒

今天要介绍Feni,一种只出产于印度南部Goa地区,并且只能在该地区贩售的酒。Feni有两种:一种酿自腰果(cashew),另一种是由酒椰子(toddy palm)酿自而成。因为我去玩的时候正好尝了一下腰果甜酒,所以今天来谈谈腰果酒。

 

印度的Goa是个独特的所在。Goa是印度最小的一个联邦(相当于咱们的省,面积大概占印度国土总面积的0.1%),位于印度南部的孟买和班加罗尔之间。不同于印度的大部分地区,Goa是受葡萄牙人统治的,一直到1961年才脱离殖民,晚了印度独立整整14年(为什么呢?因为受葡萄牙人的影响,整个goa都很悠闲)。Goa有很长的海滩,常年招待很多从俄罗斯、英国和欧洲大陆来度假的退休老人。近年来也有越来越多的印度年轻人来这里赶新潮。我觉得很像咱们的海南(常年很多俄罗斯和东北银哦)。不同于三亚的是Goa有山,植被繁茂,生长着很多名贵的香料和坚果。腰果就是其中一种。

腰果的坚果(cashew nut)是长在果实(cashew fruit)上的,一个巨大的腰果果只结一个小小的坚果粒。当地人将腰果的坚果从腰果果实部分采摘之后,坚果拿去烘干、封装,果实部分则被用来做酿酒。

当地人将腰果的果实碾碎,然后将汁水收集起来,装进一个特殊的陶制锅状容器。容器底下可以生火,用于蒸馏。蒸馏之后的腰果汁流入另一口半埋于地下的陶制容器,自然发酵几天之后就是酒精浓度在45%左右的腰果甜酒啦!

我当时去了一个香料种植园参观,他们就还在用这种土制容器。不知道是否不能工业化腰果甜酒的生产,Feni大部分目前还是这种小规模的生产作坊方式。在种植园的时候我尝了一小杯,虽然酒精度数和伏特加差不多,却很好入口,非常甘甜,像度数稍烈的白葡萄酒。售价也出乎意料的便宜,比如路边小餐馆里,一杯纯feni是20印度卢比,而一杯啤酒则要100印度卢比。

可惜我当时并不知道feni在别处买不到,不然就背一瓶回来,壮大我们小酒馆的收藏了。诶。

福州六年免检车辆第二次领标

相比2014年的第一次体验,这次真是简单多了。
首先,环保标志取消了,少了一个项目。
其次,建议选择福州市民服务中心办理,可以到微信公众号(微信号:fzssmfwzx)里提前预约车管所业务,选择好办理时段,节约时间。
第三,现场实际办理流程很简单。用微信预约提供的身份证拿去排队机器刷一下拿排队凭条等候办理;原本按照委托办理流程(车辆挂在老婆名下),需要复印证件什么的,实际到了现场,办理人员只拿了车辆行驶证原件和交强险副本(保险第三联,公安部门留存)去录入相关信息,然后打出一张单子带着你的行驶证到隔壁制证窗口,不到两分钟就办出年检标志。其他东西全部不看!!!白瞎了我一块钱复印费。

Palmas, the new frontier

I left Lansing at 4pm on Tuesday and arrived Palmas, Tocantins, Brazil at 4:30 pm on Wednesday. It took me four flights, 24 hrs to get to this newly-established city, the interior of Brazil. Used to be part of another state, Tocantins was formed in 1988. A year later, the capital of this state, Palmas was being built. Palmas has 2219 sq km, but only 265 thousand residents, the population density of which is 106 /sq km, 7% of Waterloo’s population density. The city was designed after Brasilia, with great infrastructure, but quite sprawled. You don’t see high buildings often..Hopefully in a few years, they will make use of the space..

The hotel we stayed at called Girassol Plaza, a wonderful place. Girassol means sunflowers in portugues, and one colleague tried to use it as my nickname, because he cannot pronounce Yue properly and I smile like a Girassol (according to him). Of course I politely suggested him to call me by my last name Dou that should be easier. The hotel itself is simply wonderful. Staff are nice, rooms are clean, guests are all well dressed (except me..), the pool is beautiful and quiet, always has some events going on at night.

The best, among all, is they have an excellent restaurant. Breakfast is buffet and is included (basically breakfast included is a default in Brazil. Some tried not to with a lower price, but people won’t accept the new norm), at least ten kinds of fruit, different bread, cheese, cakes, yogurt, cereal, and espresso. After 10am, then they will change the settings to lunch, and then tea, and dinner..Food is excellent there, I had the best fish ever, very juicy and tasty meat.  In the restaurant, they put a special flower on the table, it is pink and has thick leaves and petals, I thought it was fake at the beginning, and even try to pinch it. The next day, flowers opened bigger, into a bigger blossoms, that’s how i finally was convinced it’s probably not plastic…

One thing I found interesting is that Brazilian chill red wine too. My colleague explained as “it’s too hot here, we have to drink it cold”. I had to warm my glass up by holding it with both hands..But it’s still good wine. No complains.

I spend three nights and two days in Palmas, in the hotel, did nothing except eat and chat…one hour at breakfast, 3 hrs at lunch, and 3 hours at dinner…I was hoping that my colleagues will get in touch with some soybean producers and we could have an interview..But until Saturday when we left Palmas for Mateiros, no luck..

And to  Mateiros, that’s where the adventure starts..

從前英國有一位愛德華.馬什Sir Edward Marsh名望甚高,是文章大家,是藝術鑑藏家,是翻譯家,是易卜生專家,是傳記作家,是二十世紀初葉編輯高手,許多著名作家的文稿都經他潤飾,當邱吉爾私人秘書當了二十多年。他編過五卷喬治王朝詩選,譯過拉封丹《寓言》,一九三九年寫過一部回憶錄追憶他和文化人政治家的交往,書名叫A Number of People,聽說一位旅英老民國文士戲譯為《一些人一些事》。這本書劉殿爵老師還在亞非學院當教授時期借給我讀,淺淺落墨,深深啟蒙,不言之言,不呼而出。毛姆一九四二年出版的二戰回憶錄 Strictly Personal前頭有一封信寫給馬什,說這本書是他筆下唯一不經馬什改過校過的書,忐忑之情,溢於言表。中外博雅的前輩都不在了,讀書寫作,乏人開釋,失落之感,無日無之。隱隱記得毛姆一次訪談中說,一轉眼他也成了人家敬之謔之的前輩,竊喜之餘,不無忤怨。我歸休兩年,老是老了,論資尚淺,排輩尚低,讀讀閑書,看看字畫,玩玩骨董,練練書法,蘋果樹下喫茶聊天,我倒高興。

佛 號

羅家信佛。羅縵信佛。羅家南洋祖宅設佛堂,四壁掛滿弘一法師墨寶,大幅小幅十多幅,爺爺那輩人供養的。弘一書法南洋多,新加坡廣洽紀念館一層樓一層樓集藏數百件,信札也多,廣洽法師數十年細心搜尋集存。紀念館門前兩株菩提樹落葉滿地,真好看,羅家一冊貝葉羅漢正是菩提葉片畫出來的。去年安徽友人譚然替我在拍賣行裏收得四頁貝葉羅漢,彩畫功力上乘,敷色跟羅家那冊相仿,極鮮麗。我供奉的弘一遺墨要數台北張安賜我的硃筆佛號最珍貴。二十九乘六十厘米,硃筆篆書「南無阿彌陀佛」,兩邊楷書「若得見於佛,除滅一切苦;能入諸如來,大智之境界」。上句邊上小字「大方廣佛華嚴經入法界品」,下句邊上小字「歲次大辰九月華嚴寺沙門勝幢」。押角佛陀肖形印,下款鈐「弘一」。張安說是二十年前張炳南老先生帶他去大稻埕老宅求得者,原本鑲鏡框供在佛盦上。弘一法師這樣精緻的硃筆佛號聽說事先都要弟子展紙算好落筆收筆的位置,分毫不誤,難怪佈局那麼妥當。董家代代信佛,老家後園設佛堂,晨昏三炷香,心安。

齋 戒

古人祭祀前沐浴更衣,整潔身心,以示虔誠,叫做齋戒。《孟子.離婁下》說:「雖有惡人,齋戒沐浴,則可以祀上帝」。柳存仁先生聊天說起齋戒,說這裏頭牽涉「八關齋」:一,不殺生;二,不偷盜;三,不邪淫;四,不妄語;五,不飲酒食肉;六,不著花鬘瓔珞、香油塗身、歌舞倡伎故往觀聽;七,不得坐高廣大牀;八,不得齋後喫食。以上八戒,故為八關。白居易〈齋戒〉詩說「每因齋戒斷葷腥,漸覺塵勞染愛輕」。黃山谷〈戲題魯處善尉廚〉說「天女原非人間色,道人今日八關齋」。董解元《西廂記諸宮調》挑明了說「張生心迷,着色事破了八關戒」。有了齋戒之規矩,乃有齋戒之掛牌,小小一塊,上寫「齋戒」二字,背面有的還寫滿文,玉做的,木做的,瓷做的,犀角象牙做的,琺瑯的,都有。從前古玩店常見,看材料雕工定貴賤。羅縵最多齋戒牌,我也珍藏了幾件,最好看的是那個琺瑯七彩金框齋戒牌,大內手工,不大,想是婦女齋戒日佩帶的。李儂在英倫得了一件,說enamel做的才漂亮,平日穿便穿佩掛在胸前,有一位英國教授懂,笑笑說:「你佩了齋戒牌,誰都不敢親你香你了!」搪瓷,景泰藍,也是琺瑯,《紅樓夢》五十三回說:「這荷葉乃是鏨琺瑯的活信,可以扭轉。如今皆將荷葉扭轉向外,將燈影逼住全向外照,看戲分外真切。」鏨字這樣用。
